<p><em>Less</em> should be used with uncountable nouns and <em>fewer </em>with countable nouns.</p>
<p>e.g</p>
<p>There were fewer women at the party than last week.</p>
<p>I think you should put less sugar in your coffee.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: line-through;">My brother owns less books than I thought he did.</span></p>
<p>My brother owns fewer books than I thought he did.</p>
<p><br class="spacer_" /></p>
<p><em>Less</em> should also be when talking about money, time and distance (even when they are countable).</p>
<p>I get paid three dollars an hour less than my friend.</p>
<p>It takes less than ten minutes to walk to the station.</p>
<p>The school is less than one hundred meters from the beach.</p>

<p>Even though it&#8217;s not grammatically correct, <em>less</em> is becoming more popular to use instead of <em>fewer</em> and most people won&#8217;t notice if you use the wrong version.</p>
