<p>It can be important to check numbers if you are having a conversation with a native speaker.</p>
<p>During the floods in Australia, a newspaper reported that 30,000 pigs had been washed away.</p>
<p>The newspaper later had to reveal they had made a mistake.  The reporter had misheard the farmer they were interviewing.</p>
<p>Instead of &#8220;thirty thousand pigs&#8221;, the farmer had said &#8220;thirty sows and pigs.&#8221;  A sow is a female pig.  That&#8217;s a big difference in the number of pigs!</p>
