Most of them offered the same pay, but they had different holidays and hours.

They also had different reputations.

There were lots of teachers who complained about the working conditions at Nova.  Of the big English schools, ECC had the best reputation for teachers, so that’s who I applied to.  I had a job interview in Australia, they organised a work visa for me and then I went over to Osaka.  I had two weeks of training and then started teaching English.

Geos and Aeon were two of the other big schools.  Some teachers were happy there, but some teachers I spoke to, didn’t like the conditions there.

When I was living in Japan, Nova collapsed.  It was really bad for students that lost a lot of money, but also bad for teachers who had lost their job.  Some of them didn’t have enough money for a plane ticket home.  Some new teachers had just arrived and they hadn’t been paid.  If they had researched the situation, they would have heard the rumors that Nova was in trouble.

Last year I heard from other teachers that it was likely that Geos was going to collapse.

Then a few days ago, they collapsed.  Even the day before they collapsed, new students were signing up and paying a lot of money.

There is an oversupply of private English schools in Japan at the moment.  The collapse of Nova meant that some students didn’t trust English schools.  The global financial crisis also meant that people had less money to spend.  There are also other options for students to take lessons online from countries in other countries.
