Australian Election
The new Australian prime minister just declared an election for August 21.
She has only been prime minister for a couple of weeks. She became prime minister because of a coup in her party, so now she wants to seek a mandate from the Australian public and win a general election.
It looks as though it will be a close election, but I think she will win the election.
Australian federal elections are every 3 years. In 2007 I was in Osaka, so I voted at the Australian consulate.
Australia is one of the few countries in the world that has compulsory voting – if you don’t vote in the election you get fined.

Hi Aidan,
Given low turnout in Japan, Japan should introduce the law that you get fined if you don’t vote as your country does. I’m afarid that there are many adults who aren’t interested in politics. I don’t say “Let’s be an expert at politics.”, but we should express opinions by going to vote.
Thanks

Hi Yuko,
I think compulsory voting is a good idea, because it makes people more interested in politics. It also helps keep out extreme groups.
If voting isn’t compulsory, then people who are more extreme (strange right-wing groups for example) have more of an influence because they are more likely to vote.
Have fun,
Aidan.
