Less and Fewer

The difference between less and fewer is difficult to remember, even for native speakers.

Less should be used with uncountable nouns and fewer with countable nouns.

e.g

There were fewer women at the party than last week.

I think you should put less sugar in your coffee.

My brother owns less books than I thought he did.

My brother owns fewer books than I thought he did.

Less should also be when talking about money, time and distance (even when they are countable).

I get paid three dollars an hour less than my friend.

It takes less than ten minutes to walk to the station.

The school is less than one hundred meters from the beach.

Even though it’s not grammatically correct, less is becoming more popular to use instead of fewer and most people won’t notice if you use the wrong version.
