There’s Nothing Like Australia

In recent years there has been a lot of criticism of Australian tourism campaigns.  Some of the commericals have been very unpopular.

In the 1980s there was a very successful campaign featuring Paul Hogan (the actor who played Crocodile Dundee).

A few years ago the tourist campaign was “Where the Bloody Hell Are You?” which is regarded as a failure.  A lot of foreigners thought it was a strange advertising slogan.

One of the problems with advertising Australia is that most Australians don’t want Australian to just be portrayed as a place to come to see nice beaches and interesting animals.  Australia has a lot more to offer than that.  But for a lot of  foreigners, the scenery and animals are some of the main reasons they want to visit Australia.

Now there is a new campaign -- “There’s Nothing Like Australia”.  It has some nice images, but some absolutely awful singing.  I don’t think it’s a very good commercial.

    Hi Aidan,

I’m sorry to say this, but I want to go to Australia one day because I want to enjoy nature there as many Japanese do. I should learn more about Australia other than animals…

I remember an Australian guy saying “Mumba(?) festival is fun”. I had never heard about the festival, though…

    Sincerely,
    yuko

    Hi Yuko,

I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to visit Australia to see the animals. As a foreigner, that’s what stands out about Australia.
But the advertising shouldn’t just rely on that.
One of the reasons (there are other reasons as well) that there aren’t as many Japanese visiting Australia is that they have already been to Australia, seen the animals and it’s not a priority to come back.

A lot of foreigners want to visit Japan to see the temples and shrines, which of course are interesting. But there are other reasons to visit Japan as well.

The Moomba festival is in Melbourne. I don’t think it’s a particularly interesting festival. There’s a street parade. Even as a kid, I thought it was a boring festival.

    Have fun,
    Aidan.
