Changes to the JLPT
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a test for people studying Japanese. It’s similar to the TOIEC test and concentrates on grammar and reading rather than speaking.
I passed the JLPT level 3 test a couple of years ago.
This year the test has been changed and now there are five levels instead of four.
Tests like the JLPT and TOIEC can be good motivators for study and they can help improve your vocabulary, but they don’t necessarily help improve your conversation. I met lots of students in Japan that had high TOEIC scores but struggled to have basic conversations.
When I was studying Japanese, I concentrated on learning conversational Japanese first (because that was what was most important to me) and then studied for the JLPT. It improved my kanji reading a lot, but there was also a lot of grammar I had to learn that I never really used.
