Asian tourists mean cash

Earlier this year, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of foreign tourists traveling to Japan plummeted 18.7% from 2008 to just 6.79 million people in 2009. This was the largest decrease in tourists since 1986 when the yen suddenly appreciated by almost 100%. Needess to say, the tourists stayed away at that time simply because everything became so darned expensive.

Probably the industry is trying desperately to get as much money as it can get out of the travellers’ pockets, but obviously it’s not working.

Maybe that’s why 100 yen shops (2 dollar shops) and JetStar are the absolute winners amidst this world economy crisis. :(

Yeah, bargain businesses usually tend to do well when there is a recession.
