Scuba Diving in the Caribbean.
In 2001, I travelled around Central America. I visited Honduras for a few days and went to Roatan – one of the Bay Islands in the Caribbean. Most people in Honduras speak Spanish, but most of the island’s inhabitants are of African descent and speak English.
From the port I took a ferry to the island. The ferry ride took about an hour and a half and the ride was really rough. The island’s main city, Coxen Hole is not the nicest place. Most people stop here just to get supplies and then head on to the much nicer town of West End, which is right near some of the island’s best beaches.
The island is a really good place to go scuba diving. I did a course to get my PADI Open Water scuba diving licence.
After I got my certificate I did a night dive which is one of the most amazing things I’ve done. The sea looks very different underwater at night. We each used flashlights to look around. I saw lots of animals like eels, octupus, lobsters and starfish.
At the end of the dive we switched off our flashlights and floated near the surface. The plankton in the water lit up. They were little specks of glowing light, like fireflies or swimming through a sea of stars. It was amazing.
Then we surfaced and there was a sky full of stars above us.
Have fun,
Aidan.
